In 1966, the shared passion, philosophy, and friendship of two church members who were teachers—Gwen Bunnell and Linda Domin—resulted in them creating Grace Lutheran Nursery School, known today as Grace Lutheran Preschool and Kindergarten. At the time, there were few preschools in the area. The founders also recognized a need for Penn State’s non-resident graduate students to have somewhere to send their kindergarten-age children to school. Gwen and Linda designed a preschool and kindergarten program focused on social and emotional growth and learning through play. They structured their school to include classroom learning centers, field trips, an annual Christmas concert, nature-based science programs, parent conferences, and provided tuition assistance for families in need. Five decades later, the school continues to flourish and is still based on the fundamental belief that learning should be a joyful experience for all.
